Student Guides
The students were our teachers.
03
Initially, I thought of the students who would translate for us as, rudely and simplistically, a “service.” Ironically, I spent most of my days at UES talking with the student interpreters who taught me much about living and learning in El Salvador; and who showed me how intense a commitment to and sacrifice for teaching children an education grounded in social justice could inspire in young people. I was reminded of my reasons for and methods of teaching over thirty years ago. - Ellen Olmstead, English Professor
