Welcome to

Seminars Abroad

Sixteen faculty members from Montgomery College, Maryland traveled to El Salvador in March, 2018 to hold meetings with colleagues at the University of El Salvador and the University of Central America.

The Global Humanities Institute’s focused on making connections with colleagues abroad so that they could learn about the status of the humanities in El Salvador by looking into the way students are taught in higher education and other levels, and the cultural value that is attached to studying the humanities. Through extended discussions with faculty and administrators, much was learned about their higher education priorities concerning the humanities and global studies. Participants became personally familiar with El Salvador by visiting a number of its important sites. The group focused on bringing back knowledge that would provide useful to Montgomery College students and in our workspaces. Excursions to San Salvador, Morazán, La Routa de los Flores, San Miguel, and San Francisco de Gotera showed us the very different faces of El Salvador that make it so rich, complex, and hard to characterize.

Who We Are

The Global Humanities Institute (GHI) at Montgomery College is funded in part by a Bridging Culures grant  that "engages the power of the humanities to promote understanding and mutual respect for people with diverse histories, cultures, and perspectives within the United States and abroad."

Our mission is to promote a global perspective in the humanities and to emphasize the role of the humanities in education and civic life.  We seek to create a model program for internationalizing the humanities at Montgomery College and to ensure that it is replicable by other colleges nationwide.

Through new and globalized courses, extensive faculty training, international partnerships, and public education programming, the GHI at Montgomery College gives students unprecedented access to the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in global situations and economics.

The GHI has formed partnerships with Xian University of Arts and Sciences, China; University of El Salvador; and OP Jindal Global University, India.

"It is critical for our next generation of students to understand foreign cultures, languages, and the complexities of US relations with other nations."
