Guatajiagua

Guatajiagua means "valley where tobacco is cultivated". 

Guatajiagua is famous for its handmade black pottery, made from volcanic soil. The black pottery is a mark of the ethnic culture of the Lenca people.

The village name, Guatajiagua, is a name that originated from the Lencan culture, which translates to "Valley of the Tobacco Cultivation." Women make the pottery for use and decoration and men fuel the fire for the kiln. The potters use traditional techniques and wood burning kilns.
